Seeing a Sudden Drop in Social Engagement?

During the summer months, there is often a dip in overall social media engagement numbers. But, over the past several weeks, there has been an even more noticeable drop in engagement, specifically on Facebook and Instagram.

The reason? According to social media experts, the changes that Meta has been making to both Facebook and Instagram are impacting the algorithms. I know, I know…we always put the blame on algorithms, but any time there is a change it takes time for things to settle and to figure out how the change has impacted the platform.

When you combine that change with the unpredictability of a summer schedule, engagement can really take a hit.

The good news? Everything usually bounces back and this should be just a temporary situation.

What can you do now?

  • Up YOUR engagement: Spend more time commenting and sharing your followers’ posts.

  • Focus on email marketing: Now is a great time to engage your audience through another channel. Bonus? Add links back to your social media posts as part of the email copy. For example: “Some of the great tips we’ve shared” with links to the actual posts where you shared the tips.

  • Change your hashtags: Experiment with different hashtag combinations on Instagram.

  • Try posting directly into the platform: Instead of using a third-party scheduling app, try scheduling directly into the platform and see if that moves the needle for your engagement.

When it comes to social media, change is inevitable. As technology continues to evolve and user preferences shift, social media platforms must adapt to meet the changing landscape. Need help navigating the social media frontier? Let us know.
